The Stream Improvement committee meet recently to plan the upcoming years projects and workdays. Our first workday will be on Saturday, April 21st to coincide with Earth Day. Planned projects will include stream bank plantings on the Neshannock in Volant and on Coolspring, Adopt-A-Highway litter pickup, trail maintenance and general spring cleanup of the DHALO area. We will meet at 9:00 in the upper parking area on Coolspring. As usual we will try to wrap things by 12:00 in time to have a hotdog before an afternoon of fishing. Our summer workdays have not been set as of now but we plan on having 5 6 workdays between June 15 and the end of September. We plan on working on many different things this summer but our main jobs will be to get some of the older deflectors back into working order. We are also plan on working on some of the stream access areas to minimize damage to the bank and to improve habitat with the placement of some large rocks in certain areas. Another project we want to do is a stream survey of the DHALO area to determine the health of the stream and locate trouble areas. We will be using a new method of stream classification that involves actual measurements using survey equipment to study the watershed. As you can see this is a full year and then some. The amount we can get done depends on you. We will need a lot of volunteers but if we can keep getting the good turnout we had at the last fall workday I know we can get a lot done. We would also like to see if anyone would rather have workdays on a weekday morning or evening. If you are interested in let us know and if we can get a large enough group together we will try it. Our workdays are usually only 3 hours long so try and make at least one. A small group can accomplish a lot in three hours and a lot of little workdays can complete a bigger job. If interested contact Jeff Kremis at (724-588-4378), Pete Anthony (724-662-2271) or any board member to get involved. |
