Notes from the Editor

Nick Loprire

It’s been a while since the late spring newsletter and as we all know, much water has flowed down stream. I hope all is well with the Neshannock TU readers and that many were netted (and released) over the past season. Don’t put that rod away though; the best fishing of the year is due with the rising tributaries of Lake Erie. I’m chomping at the tippet to get at those silver freight trains. I love when you can feel the rod bend down in the reel seat. Come on rain!!

The recent events in our great country have been a galvanizing influence on the population. I have noticed people exhibit much more tolerance and patience with each other. Even the madhouse at Elk Creek Access is more ordered than in past years. I hope, when we are through this trying period, that the close spirit of the people today, remains. "Might and right" will prevail!!

Please send your thoughts, prayers and best wishes out to Pete Anthony’s wife, Edie, for a speedy recovery from recent surgery.

The summer brought to completion two projects. First, we were able to install the bronze memorial plague for Tony Palumbo our founding president. If you walk the main path north (put in by the beagle club) from the area of the lower "big" pool on the project you will find the large rock with the bronze plague. At this point we have not had the dedication. With ole man winter about to visit, it’s most likely that the formal dedication ceremony will be done in early spring. The second project completion was the installation of a beautiful sign just upstream of the fly shop in Volant. The sign recognizes the efforts of our chapter in the bank stabilization project and the financial support of the Audubon Society.

Deer season is here and a reminder to everyone to be careful and remember to leave the woods better than when you entered. If everyone would pick up a can, wrapper or small trash item think what an impact that would make. A million hunters picking up one or two items at the end of the hunt could make an enormous difference. After all, we are a conservation organization.

Good luck to all and may the buck of your dreams cross your path. Hopefully you won’t blow the shot like yours truly did a few years ago. Most of all, be safe and have fun.
