These work projects, under the supervision of Dennis Shadron with assistance from Gary Mariacher, Jim Deitrick, Dave Thompson, & Doug Pears, have helped fishermen gain access to the stream. One major project was the construction of the footbridge at the 'mailbox/bulletin board area'. (To show their appreciation to one of the Beagle Club's dedicated & respected members, the bridge was named the Glenn Covert Bridge.) Another major project was clearing the 'streamside footpath' into a roadway. We owe our thanks to Club personnel for allowing the TU Chapter to use the road for stream improvement projects and stocking trout. Weather permitting, I 'walk the stream' at least six days each week. Normally Beagle Club members are training their dogs. It's almost an everyday experience to watch and listen to a beagle in hot pursuit of a rabbit, have the rabbit stop near the stream for an 'ear scratching exercise' and then take off for a briar patch. (As my dad used to say, 'there is no better music to the ears than the sound of a beagle in pursuit of a rabbit'.) I'm sure the dog owners get as much satisfaction out of watching their dogs track a rabbit as fishermen get out of hooking into a Coolspring trout. A special word to trout fishermen; if you see Beagle Club members working or enjoying a day of dog training, please take a few moments of your trout-fishing time and thank them for the use of their property. On behalf of Trout Unlimited, the Neshannock Chapter, & the PA Fish & Boat Commission, we wish to thank Sharpsville Beagle Club members for giving us the opportunity to access the stream via their land. The next issue of the Clearwater Gazette will include an article on the Larry Peter's property. |

Meet the LandownersPete Anthony This is a second in a series of articles to recognize and show our appreciation to Coolspring Creek delayed-harvest-area landowners. This article introduces Clearwater Gazette readers to the Sharpsville Beagle Club. The Sharpsville Beagle Club was founded in 1919. Members moved the club to its present location in 1946. Doug Pears presently serves as the Club's President. Their land holdings consist of 120 plus acres, bordering both the east and west side of Coolspring. On the east side of Coolspring, the streamside property starts at the Big Rock area and extends north to an area approximately 200 yards north of the 'Gas Line Crossing' area. On the west side, the streamside property starts at the Big Rock area and extends north, adjacent to Mrs. Vogan's property, to the old railroad bed. The property line then extends northeast along the old railroad bed to an area approximately 600 yards south of where a cable is installed across the stream. For the past several years Beagle Club personnel have been conducting a number of work projects to expand their dog training area to the west side of the stream. |
