The road was once known as "dump road" so you can imagine what was down the steep drop along that road. Tom and Carol pulled out enough old appliances to equip a couple of kitchens.

The other effort headed by Pete Anthony, was to continue the planting effort along the stream to make sure there is streamside trees and vegetation to protect this improving fishery. Please take care when walking the stream, not to destroy the new plantings. You will notice the trees marked with yellow tape. The plantings from previous years are doing quite well.

When the work was done we a convened in the parking lot for a cookout and some good conversation. Thanks to everyone that helped. The chapter really appreciates the effort and Coolspring will definitely improve if we have this kind of support.

After lunch some of us met with students from Mercer High School for some basic training on flyfishing. Thanks to their advisor Bill Chess for helping coordinate the effort. I know it was a success because the kids were attentive and interested. One student even caught a rainbow later in the afternoon.

Getting young people involved in a lifetime sport like flyfishing is a good sign for the future of the sport and conservation in general.

Work Day Successful

Jeff Kremis

Saturday April 21 was our first workday of the year and it was a good one. There were about 20 participants and the well-coordinated effort was a complete success.

One crew walked the "adopt a highway" section that the chapter supports and filled about 34 bags with litter. That’s good in a way but you have to ask yourself why people feel the need to place their refuse along the road vs. putting it in a proper place at home.

Special thanks to Tom and Carol Jochman for the added effort to remove some of the long standing debris that has been deposited along the road to the main parking area on Coolspring Creek.
