In Attendance:

A. Monroe, N. Loprire, J. Mondok, C. Jochman, T. Jochman, K. Tarczy, and R. Natoli
Guests: Shawn Hedglin and Bill Stevenson

1. Opening Comments – Aaron Monroe
  • Aaron yielded the opening comments time to Shawn Hedglin’s report on the silt problem at the Wolf Creek handicapped fishing area.
  • Wolf Creek “Silting” Problem / Children’s & Handicapped Fishing Area - Shawn works at the Mercer County Conservation District offices in Mercer, Pa.  He came to our board meeting at the request of Pete Anthony to discuss what can be done at Wolf Creek to solve the silt buildup problem in the stream.  The silt is washing down stream from the dam that was removed near Grove City College, and the buildup is occurring right in front of the Handicapped Fishing Platform.

Shawn met with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (Pa DEP) to discuss what could be done to eliminate the silt, and prevent it from reoccurring in the future.  Pa DEP recommended that Neshannock Chapter pursue a joint permit (the Borough of Grove city or the Grove City Sportsman’s Club would be two examples for a permit partner) before starting the project.  He recommended hiring an engineering consultant to study the problem and come up with a proposed plan, and fill out the paperwork for a permit.  The plan should include the following:
    1. Dredge the stream
    2. Build a “Cross-Vane” structure to stop future silt from moving down stream
    3. Stabilize the sediment source

Jim Mondok said that we could apply for a Growing Greener Grant for funds to use on the project.  He also said that the Environmental Biology Club at Grove City College is interested and may also want to partner with us to fix the problem.

Motion: Tom Jochman made a motion to hire a consultant to do a Wolf Creek evaluation that may lead to a Growing Greener Grant application.  Nick Loprire seconded the motion and it passed.  Jim Mondok will contact a consultant that he knows to see if he would be interested in working on the stream sediment problem.

2. Minutes from Last Meeting – Aaron Monroe
  • The minutes were approved as written.
3. Treasurer’s Report – Jeff Kremis
  • Receipts & Disbursements Report – Jeff reviewed the report ending February 28th
  • The Treasurers Report will be filed for future audit
4. Committee Reports:

A. Watershed Coordinator – Jeff Kremis/Jim Mondok

  •  Jeff Kremis was absent – No Report

B. Nursery – Pete Anthony & Ken Tarczy

  • Trout Size – Ken reported that the Trout are growing rapidly and the raceway is getting crowded.  The Golden Palomino trout are about 17 inches long.
  • Deer Creek – An electric shock study was recently conducted on the stream to check the fish population.  The results were good, and showed that the Trout we placed in the stream are still living in the same areas where they were originally stocked.
  • Pa Fish & Boat Commission Stocking – The Fish Commission will stock Trout in Cool Spring Creek on Wednesday April 1st and Thursday April 30th.

C. Banquet / Newsletter - Nick Loprire

  • Banquet - Nick reviewed the attendance figures he has thus far and came up with 170 people.  There are usually more ticket sales the last two weeks before the banquet, which he will watch because we only have room for approximately 200 people.
  • Table Layout / Individual & Corporate Sponsored Tables – He reviewed the table layout and sponsors, and the number of people at each table to see if we could combine seating in some cases.
  • Alcoholic Drinks - Cash Bar – Nick asked Carol to check on having two popular beers available for the patrons to purchase, last year they only offered one beer.
  • Soft Drinks – Soft drinks will be free of charge; Nick will ask the owners to run a “tab” so that we can reimburse the Shenango Valley Civic Center for the soft drink costs.
  • Jobs List – Nick went over the jobs list and assigned everyone his or her responsibilities for working at the banquet.  He will revise the list and e-mail it to us.

D. Membership – Tom Jochman

  • No Report

E. Youth Coordinator – Aaron Monroe

  • No Report
5. Old Business:
  • Nothing to Discuss
6. New Business:
  • Election of Officers and Board Members – Aaron requested that the board elect officers, and renew board membership for the following members whose terms expired in February:
    1. Dick Natoli – Continue as the Chapter Secretary
    2. Tom Jochman – Board Member
    3. Jim Mondok – Board Member
    4. Ken Tarczy – Board Member
    5. Bob Shuey – Board Member
    6. New Board Member – Bill Stevenson

All six people listed above were officially voted on and accepted as board members.

Aaron will be stepping down, and we need to elect Jeff Kremis as the new President in April.  We also need a replacement at Jeff’s previous post, the chapter Treasurer, and we talked with Carol Jochman about accepting that position.  The board will elect a new President and Treasurer at the April 27th meeting.
