Allegheny Defense Project

...working for the protection of the natural heritage of the Alleghenies...

Did you know that the Allegheny Forest is comprised or three different types of Forest. First, Northern hardwoods in the north meet mixed mesophytic (trees that grow under medium amounts of moisture) and the central hardwood of the midwest. There is a chance that this diversity could be lost. The problem is that the U.S. Forest Service would like to change the Allegheny forest into a cherry tree farm. They are doing this by rampant clear cutting the is causing erosion, pollution of streams, and eliminationof habitat. Couple this with a 500% increase in Oil and gas drilling since 1996 and we have a problem.

Please plan to be at the October 28 meeting at 7:00 pm to hear more. A presentation by the Rachel Martin from the Allegheny Defense Project is planned for Saturday, October 28th in the “All Purpose Room" at the MCAR Center in Hermitage, Pa. They will explain their mission to improve habitat by limiting tree cutting in the forest. They plan on reviewing the effects of rampant clear cutting of the forest, which causes erosion, stream pollution, and elimination of wildlife habitat.
