Hare's Ear Soft Hackle
A Hare's Ear Soft Hackle is one of the great generic bug patterns. On one size or another it's been used as an emerging mayfly in rivers and as a Callibaetis emerger or damsel-flly nymph in lakes. It's a good general search pattern, either by itself or as a dropper behind a dry fly.
This fly is easy to tie...I use a Tiemco 200R hook and tie a short, carrot-shapped body of hare's-mask dubbing with either a copper wire or, on larger files, a fine, flat, gold tinsel rib.
Typically, I leave them unweighted and use split shot if I need to fish it deeper than the surface film.
